What is zakat?

Zakat is a fundamental pillar of Islam, referring to the obligatory charitable contribution financially able Muslims must give annually. It is usually set at 2.5% of one’s savings and assets held for a lunar year, provided they exceed a minimum threshold known as nisab.

Why Do We Pay Zakat?

  • Religious Duty – Zakat is a command from Allah mentioned in the Quran alongside prayer (salah). It purifies one’s wealth and serves as an act of worship.
  • Purification of Wealth – It cleanses wealth from greed and selfishness, ensuring ethical economic behavior.
  • Helping the Needy – Zakat is distributed among the poor, orphans, debtors, and those in need, reducing inequality.
  • Social Welfare – It helps build a just and compassionate society where wealth is circulated fairly.
  • Spiritual Growth – Giving zakat strengthens faith, gratitude, and detachment from materialism.
