From the Sacredness of Home to Self-Actualisation: My Journey as a Most Impactful Ālimah

By Shaykha Saleha Islam Bukhari
In a world where recognition often follows visibility, I’ve found that the most meaningful transformations begin in silence, between the pages of sacred texts, behind closed doors of love and care, or in the humble corners of a family home.
This is my story: a journey from the sacred and private world of motherhood to the public realm of Islamic leadership. By Allah’s grace, I became an award-winning Ālimah, a visible voice on Islam Channel’s IslamiQA, a contributor to Shariah Councils, and a Muslim chaplain serving in London’s Canary Wharf business district. Alhamdulillah, I was honoured with the 2024 Most Impactful Ālimah award and became a 2025 finalist for the British Muslim Awards in the category of Religious Advocate of the Year.
A Quiet but Intentional Start
My journey didn’t start with media appearances or award nominations. It began in the quiet corners of my home, in moments of nurturing, learning, and reflection. While raising children and managing a household, I nurtured a parallel devotion to my faith and my relationship with Allah, ensuring I never slipped into darkness. Night after night, I immersed myself in Islamic studies, not driven by ambition, but by a deeper sense of purpose, one forged through pain and profound loss.
I feel compelled to share my story because I know there are sisters who, like me, have experienced hardship and heartache, and perhaps have not yet recognised that through it all, Allah is guiding them with His mercy and wisdom.
When I earned the title of Ālimah, it was not just an academic credential; it was a trust, one I strive to carry with honour, responsibility, and sincerity.
Redefining What It Means to Lead
In the beginning, my work was hyper local: counselling and mentoring women, teaching Quran and Tajwīd, and offering Islamic reminders in my community. But as I connected Islamic tradition with lived experience, my voice began to resonate more widely. It wasn’t just about what I taught, but how I made people feel – seen, heard, and spiritually grounded.
One of my most impactful talks, “Unleash the Light Within: The Transformative Power of Knowledge for Muslim Women”, reframed sacred learning as a tool of empowerment, especially for women who have long carried the weight of service without formal recognition.
This fusion of knowledge and lived experience, I believe, is what led to being named Most Impactful Ālimah – not as a reflection of status, but as a testament to the lives uplifted and hearts soothed by the true message of Islam.
A Chaplain in the Heart of London
My chaplaincy takes me beyond the mosque and into the fast-paced corridors of Canary Wharf. There, I offer pastoral support, ethical guidance, and a spiritual presence to professionals navigating the demands of corporate life.
In spaces driven by deadlines and metrics, I try to remind people that spiritual well-being and compassion belong everywhere, even in boardrooms. For Muslim professionals, I aim to be a trusted presence. For non-Muslims, a bridge of interfaith understanding. For all, a reminder that soul care is a necessity, not a luxury.
Justice Through Shariah Councils
In addition to community and corporate care, I contribute to Shariah Councils, helping mediate complex family matters. My presence in these traditionally male-dominated spaces brings essential balance, especially where women’s voices risk being marginalised.
I strive to offer rulings and guidance not only grounded in legal texts but also in compassion and fairness – believing that Shariah, when applied with integrity, is a force for healing, not hardship.
Faith Meets the Airwaves
In 2023, I stepped into the media spotlight as one of the first female co-hosts on IslamiQA on Islam Channel. My goal was never to seek visibility for its own sake or to be the only Shaykha among many Shuyukh, but to provide calm, informed, and empathetic responses to live audience questions. For many Muslim women, I understand that my presence signifies something long overdue – a scholarly female voice brought to the forefront of religious discourse.
Recognition Rooted in Responsibility
In 2025, I became a finalist for the Religious Advocate of the Year at the British Muslim Awards. I see this not as a badge, but as a trust. It’s not about being seen, it’s about being useful. I hope to be a voice for women who have served tirelessly in homes, communities, and classrooms without spotlight, but with sincerity.
The Path Forward
I am currently working on a memoir that blends storytelling, spiritual insight, and practical guidance for Muslim women navigating motherhood, identity, and leadership.
A Legacy Rooted in Service
From home-building to hosting televised sessions, from chaplaincy in London’s financial centre to arbitration in Shariah courts – my journey defies the limits society often places on women of faith.
I stand, and hope to continue standing, at the intersection of tradition and transformation, committed to carrying forward the legacy of learned Muslim women with heart, integrity, and the courage to lead without ever losing sight of what matters most – faith, family and home.
My story, I pray, is not simply inspirational but instructive: a reminder that true faith-based leadership is not found in status, but in service.
